As I reflect on the year that has just past and what my goals and aspirations were for it, I find myself with mixed emotions. There are so many absolutely incredible memories that I have shared with both family and friends.
Of those memories, the most precious would have to be with my wife and son. The trips we have taken, new experiences we have all shared together as a new family and most significantly, the changes in Augustus. He has gone from an infant to a toddler, and with that I think about what will come in the New Year? What will he learn next? What will spark his interests? What skills and thoughts will he acquire? The list is endless, and like any father, I’m excited for that!
My next thoughts were not as pleasant… I began to think of my own personal growth and where I had told myself I wanted to be at exactly this moment in time. And to be honest, I fell short, not just a little short, but way short! To be brutally honest I don’t know if I accomplished anything, but I can’t tell for sure because I didn’t write a single one down! (We will get to that). Now, after a little research on the topic, I learned that only a measly 8% of people accomplish their New Years goals (we will call them goals as opposed to resolutions, that’s what they really are). So, now I don’t feel so shitty! I’m not the only one!
So what separates those who accomplish their goals versus those who don’t? And let’s not look at New Year’s resolutions; let’s talk about goals in general. I learned that there are fundamental things that the successful goal accomplishers do that I wasn’t even aware of! And like a cliché I googled the definition of insanity. And, just as I had suspected I fit that description! Go ahead… Google it, I’ll wait…
Now if you can tell me that you don’t fit that description, then lucky you! I was not so fortunate. But luckily, to fix a problem, you have to know what it is in the first place. So here we are at the beginning of 2017. I am going to just go ahead and claim this as my “Champagne Year”. You see, I was born on September 17th, so much like champagne birthday, you can google that too, I decided that a birthday wasn’t enough, I’m taking a whole year, and 2017 you are it. Now, I am not saying this is everything there is to know about setting and accomplishing goals, all I’m saying is this is what I think will work for me. You need to find what works for you, I just hope this sparks the desire inside you to want more for yourself.
So what did I learn when I started looking? Well I learned that I can’t expect my outcome to change if I am not willing to make changes to alter my path. You see we are all products of the total accumulation of each and every decision we have ever made! Rattle that around inside your cranium for a couple seconds… Fortunately this actualization comes at a pretty coincidental time, New Year’s, the time we all (or most) try to reinvent ourselves for the year ahead. Well I’m here to help give you few little insights into things that are going to help me, and you… but mostly me (no offense, I’m not sure if you will do them or not) make the most of my life, health and fatherhood (catchy tagline right!) so let’s dive in.
As discussed previously, we are a product of all of our decisions to date. So, first we need to take some ownership of that! My life or yours is the product of MY decisions, that means that I am in control of my thoughts, my attitude and my path going forward. That is a pretty major factor, and the reason this blog came into fruition. I decided my life, my health and my goals needed some accountability. Of course it’s up to me to hold myself accountable, but why not put it out to the whole world to call you on your shit if they see fit! So I would challenge you to have a look at your own situation and take a bit of ownership on where you are today.
Before I went on with setting a bunch of crazy goals for the year I need to do a little work on numero Uno. I know that if I want to be one of those 8% I need a bit of a different mindset than I currently have, and most of all I need to develop some “crush the shit outta my goals this year” habits. A major part of this blog will be challenging myself to develop 1-3 new habits per month based on the most successful people in the world. Things like Journaling (using a Day-Timer), creating and utilizing a financial spreadsheet to track my purchases, developing a solid morning routine that starts my day off just the right way and expanding my knowledge base. The list is never ending. By recognizing who I want to be both professionally and personally I want to set myself up for success by creating winning habits and be the best version of myself possible. I think my family deserves that of me.
People really like to re-invent the wheel right off the bat. And that is one of the major reasons goals are never accomplished. I mean setting ambitious goals for yourself is all sorts of fun, think about the cliché of every little boy who is going to grow up to be an astronaut, or the little girl who wants to be a princess, hell maybe nowadays those two can be swapped out! Who knows, and I’m not saying either couldn’t be either. The point is that when we set these types of overly ambitious goals we lose interest when we get frustrated and hit road blocks that throw us off our game. So set tangible goals and be specific. Instead of saying “I’m going to start a blog this year!” I decided to say, “I’m going to start a blog in 2017 and commit to one post a month”. Be realistic and set goals that you can achieve.

Track your goals. I am going to be setting goals on a monthly basis and writing them down in my journal and telling my wife. you can do the same, or make a vision board or write them on the bathroom mirror, doesn’t matter just put them somewhere where you will read them often. Do what works for you.
Finally, believe in yourself, and believe you can accomplish the things you set out to do! Simply setting a goal increases your chances of achieving that goal significantly. But, we as I stated earlier, we tend to loose interest when there are bumps in the road that throw your stride off. Just remember the movie Hook when everyone starts believing in Peter Pan! Then he just slays old Captain Hook! Pretty motivating right?
So… to create the accountability that this blog was started to do, I think it’s time for me to share what I intend to accomplish in the month of January 2017:
- Design a morning routine and make it a habit over the next 30 days.
- A book to read and complete is “The Wealth Mastery Playbook” by Richard Dolan –
- For health, I will complete in full the FITAZFK 28 Day exercise program –
- Start and end my day with the Rodan + Fields “Beyond The Shave” – (Because when you look and feel better, you play better!)
